Southwest Florida Weather
The weather between Fort Myers and Naples, Florida is tropical and the sun is usually always shining. The average highs are the highest in June, July and August which top out at 90 to 95°. The record high has not even hit 100. The average lows are between 50 and 60 which are usually seen in January and February. Record lows have actually gone as low as 25 to 26° but this is very unusual. Typically, the weather is fairly comfortable year-round from 70 to 90° on average.
Hurricanes
As long as you’re prepared, hurricanes don’t have to be the disastrous scene that the media makes them out to be. Each year there is roughly 10 to 25 tropical storms or hurricanes throughout the season, many of which stay put in the Gulf of Mexico and never see the Florida coast. Many of these hurricane reports trickle down to a tropical storm by the time they hit our shores and are no more disastrous than a windy, rainy day. Each year the hurricane season starts on different days but is roughly June through the end of November. This is when most of the tropical cyclones happen in the hottest months and into the fall. Because of our location on the protected side of the Gulf of Mexico, we rarely see severe weather touch our shores. As with most of Florida’s weather, we have the afternoon showers during the rainy season and beautiful, warm mornings and evenings.
Preparation
One of the biggest things visitors and residents can do is simply stay prepared and informed. Not paying attention to threats or weather reports is one of the biggest mistakes you can make. Lee County has launched the “Know Your Zone” that allows residents to type in their address to learn their evacuation routes. You can even download the evacuation routes from your iPhone or Android device so you’re ready just in case a storm hits. Collier County residents can also sign up for weather alerts.
Although it’s been years since we’ve seen any severe weather in the Southwest Florida area, we can’t be lax on the severity of threats. Don’t stress, know the weather reports, know the seasons, and enjoy the beautiful sunshine. After all, isn’t that why you’re here?
